Automated License Plate Readers (Flock Cameras)
More than a dozen speakers, mostly non-residents, urged the council to end the town's Flock ALPR contract, citing privacy, data-sharing loopholes, misread-plate arrests elsewhere, and neighboring localities dropping Flock. The mayor and police chief defended tightened local safeguards and said alternatives with full local data control are being explored.
Sewer Backup Claims and Municipal Liability
A July 4 storm caused raw sewage to back up into the church on Palmer Drive, doing over $40,000 in damage. The town's insurer, VRSA, denied the claim, blaming roots in the line, and church members asked Council to appoint a committee to review it.
ReCode Blacksburg Land Use Code Update
The town is moving forward with its comprehensive zoning ordinance rewrite, with a special work session scheduled with consultants Camiros in October.
